A Telegram

At the edge of a wood, in the afternoon, people are running around, treading the tall grass and waving small flags.
Their movements at first look as if they have discovered some very rare species of snail which used to be prepared as food, or some kind of fruit destroyed by a disease, which was thought to have been eradicated.
The women who work in the nursery leave their work; a cyclist leans his bicycle against the road sign.
The tramp who picked poppies along the embankment suddenly disappears in the grass, leaving behind scattered petals.
They all come to the clearing at the edge of the wood, gazing: the sky has disappeared, and instead, a miraculous emptiness rolls in its place.
One might easily think that it is merely an afternoon reverie, if only the mowed grass did not seem so indifferent or smell so sweetly.
