Poetry – Milan Šelj – War is different when it has a human face

The next day she texts they will start

their journey from Budapest around midday.

Maya, her mother, granny,

and a twelve-year old brother.

I wait for them all afternoon,

airing the blankets, folding towels,

preparing fresh linen…

When I make their beds, I try to picture

their faces in an attempt to somehow

distract myself. I don’t want to admit

that I am scared.
