Hand over mouth

Hand over mouth

My strength is in your inscrutability.

My fingers are your oblivion –

I repeated

from the dark

until dark

and blind nights have undone us.

I sent you to hell

and myself

to a distant island.

After decades of training in exile

I will be back ready for my closing words.

Hand over mouth

The folklore of the future keeps a special form of mercy in case you show up unannounced. Like Chinese New Year lanterns on Broken Heights, you twinkle instead of a neon calling. Where vistas discreetly expand for the attentive observer. Left without the right to choose, in search of the last tree, we find a muffled cry. Like a mad dog, you watch the ocean and ask for the Mediterranean. A short sunset awaits in the song of the nightingale, the drawings in the stone, the signs disappeared in the rolled-over sand of transience. You surround the house you are building on the island with ramparts, and your love for birds finds its way into folk songs. Street entertainers mention you in a whisper. No one is sure you really exist anymore. You have been last seen on a foggy day. The witness is dead and I can’t confirm you with anything except a legend. You finally succeeded in your intentions. Remember the boiling coffee of childhood, forget the last tree, and hug me. Finally, pay off of patience and persistent work.
