Late Coming Bones

SCENE TWO (Dream interpretations)

THE OFFICIAL:
This is Mark Alem of Qyprilians, Koprulu (Turkish) – a bridge . He comes from a family that contributed more than any other and made the Porte and our Empire shine with victories.
EMPLOYEE I:
What are the Qyprilians, Master?
THE OFFICIAL:
They are Albanians! The Qyprilians are the only Albanian family on the earth that has a poem commemorating their name.
EMPLOYEE I:
And the poem, what is the poem?
THE OFFICIAL:
This man here that you see has a privileged position in a hierarchy of the government. He was appointed as an interpreter in the Palace of Dreams of the Empire. Since then he hasn’t been able to come out of them, of dreams. His distant past, those massacre scenes, killings and burnings conducted by our army five hundred and fifty years ago in order to conquer his country, comes back to him from his dreams.
EMPLOYEE II:
Isn’t Turkey his country, my lord?
THE OFFICIAL:
There is a misunderstanding between Albanians there in Albania, and Albanians, the Qyprilians, here in Turkey. It is difficult for an Albanian there to understand the imperial dimension of Albanian families Islamized by their own will. It can be said: Albanians there don’t pay any attention to all the contributions of the Albanians here for the Turkish Empire, for the big country a part of which is Albania. Those Albanians there say: we are not interested in what you have done for the Big Empire, tell us what have you done for this small crumb that is called Albania?
EMPLOYEE I:
There are Albanians that say that the Sultan has put a curse on them.
THE OFFICIAL:
When the Turks attacked Albania with swords and armors, Albanians thought that they were coming to conquer them. But the Turks brought them a gift, a Big Empire.
EMPLOYEE II:
An empire – our empire, a gift for Albanians!
THE OFFICIAL:
Turks gave Albanians what they were missing. A vast space! One day Albanians will gain their real independence. Yes, but then they will loose the vast space in which they fly like the wind. They will be enclosed in that narrow piece of their land. Their winds will hinder them, they will clash on the mountains like birds that don’t know how to fly yet. They will become stunted. And at last they will ask: “What did we gain from our independence from Turkey?” Then a day will come when they will again turn their eyes towards Turkey. To unite once again.
