THE BROAD SPECTRUM OF SHORT FICTION IN THE -ANOTHER STORY – IMPRINT

For the authors, taking part in the literary adventure that is Another Story represents an opportunity to engage in broad range of compositional, thematic and stylistic experimentations. The challenge posed before most of the Macedonian writers represented in the imprint to capture “the world in a nutshell” relying on their ability to compress meaning in the condensed space offered by this short literary form was a novelty, a first attempt to write following the criteria specific to flash fiction, even though many of them are already well established authors known to the public from their previous prose works. For the readers, on the other hand, these fragments, miniatures, microfictions, flash stories pose a set of different esthetic provocations which mobilise our preconcieved reading habits in a different manner, engaging both our rational and imaginative capacities.

When one wants to find the seed which sprouted the literature adventure of the Another Story imprint, it would best to focus on the publishing of the collection of small stories I Am Old by David Albahari in Serbia. This book came about as a result of a series of well thought out and organized literary meetings of the author with students from several high schools in Belgrade. (Огњановиќ, 2014). Namely, the author came up with the idea to make seals with his signature accompanied by several different proverbs that not only refer to writing and literature, but to life in general, such as: How would I know what is what; I am your book; Short story – long silence; This book is not a book, it’s a world of its own; The writer is a seal, etc.). He decided to use these seals when signing and dedicating the books given to the students. This gives the saying The writer is a seal, gracing the inside of the book cover of the Macedonian edition of I Am Old (I Am Old In Skopje), the weight of a literary manifesto which is supported by the short prose texts of Olivera Kjorveziroska and Vladimir Martinovski in the form of greeting to the author. Still, it is more than clear that the works published under the Another Story imprint are not classical texts in the epistolary tradition, nor a prose that may be categorised as short story– letter, but rather short fictions created and inspired by a variety of poetics located along the rich spectrum of literary prose forms. Starting from the short prose works by Olivera Kjorvezirovska (Little Novellas Sans Sugar), Lydia Davis (Sitting in the Sun…), Ivan Shopov (091 – Antipostcards from Skopje), Bojan Babikj (Giraffes in the Catacombs) and Vlada Uroshevikj (Baroque Submarine), Another Story includes prose works following the poetics of the haibun (Cat in the Mist by Martinovski), a rhyming verse story (Textile Poem by Pandalf Vulkanski) and hypnographic writing (Sleep by Rumena Buzharovska). Among the other short prose texts, we can find examples of Facebook posts (Watching Intently by Irena Ristikj, Vela Luka Cabin, Under Vodno Mountain by Ognen Chemerski), journal entries (Beyond L. American Journal (5.10. – 23.10. 2016)) by Lidija Dimkovska), as well as hard to pin down “texts” composed in a different semiotic key as rhythmic and melodic exercises (Radishani Preludes by Vladimir Lukash),.
