They found it glistening in its glory
not far from the temple
among the shards of pots.
From within spurted streams
of an ancient dawn.
With a body able wordlessly
to move hand and thought,
it was found already at work.
All around spring with living letters
spelled out its name in leaves:
it poured youth on its lips,
on its hair the scent of lily,
on its fingers molten silver…
Their bodies sullied with desire
before the holy Altar
being stoned by time
the poets read its verdict
kneeling on dump ground
where nature gleamed with triumph.
