JOVICA IVANOVSKI: TEN POEMS

A CARPET OF GENES
AS WHEN SOMEONE IN AUTUMN…
ESCAPE FROM…
THEY ARE OF ALL KINDS
WATER COVER
MEMORIES, AS IF NOT MINE
CROSSING ALSO NEEDS EXERCISE
IMPROVISATION
ADULTERER’S
I’D RATHER SHOOT

A CARPET OF GENES

Life is expensive, like a Persian
rug of several million knots
	trodden upon by whoever comes.
Colourful, unique, designed by
	a pair of diligent weavers.
Your family tree has always been
like a graduation photo book.
But when you give it a thought, all those
branches of ancestors, leafing
like genes, have ended in you...
A horrible thing.
A heritage you can’t
		give up.
Your children inherit it too,
and it bothers you a lot
to see your own flaws in them.
You’re a rug made of a million genes,
whose knots will be undone
by the grandsons of your own
			great-grandsons.
